Weather

Cornwall’s weather changes so much, even during the same day, that many of the forecasts on TV and radio, and even on Apps, should perhaps be ‘taken with a pinch of salt’.

Possibly the most reliable is the service offered by the Kernow Weather Team. They are a group of local meteorologists who are very up to date with weather reports for the next several hours.

Some of the slopes down to the beach from the dunes (Hayle Towans) are steeper than others. Alternatively you could stay on the Towans and walk around the dunes.

St Ives

This is a pdf showing driving directions, or how to go by the 18 bus, to the St Erth Park and Ride. Please note our recommendation to avoid having your day there spoilt by the sea gulls!!

Shops

A five minute drive away are several useful shops. At the West Cornwall Retail Park are M&S, Boots, Next and Costa Coffe. Just past the roundabout, goung towards Hayle, is a Lidl store.

Buses

For times, and real-time tracking of buses (though we can not guarantee the accuracy) we suggest looking at :

For the number 18 bus https://bustimes.org/services/t1-penzance-hayle-redruth-truro

There is 1 bus that stops in the main road.
IMPORTANT. To request a bus to stop for you, hold your arm out so the driver can see you clearly.

Going towards Truro, Redruth and Camborne

The Number 18 bus goes in one direction to Truro, stopping at Camborne, Redruth. Pool and Threemilestone. The bus stops for this are on this side of Turnpike Road, one just 50 metres on your left, and the other between the Spar shop/garage and the Turnpike Inn.

Going towards Hayle and Penzance

The number 18 bus towards Penzance goes through, and stops in, Hayle.

On the other side of the main road there is a stop 50 metres on the left, (which is exactly opposite the bus shelter on the other side of the road), and one turning right, just past, and opposite side of the road to The Turnpike Inn.

Walk

There is a walk to the Towans. We would like to point out it is not smooth terrain and can often be muddy as it goes along edges of fields that are often ploughed. Decent walking boots or footwear are advised.

It took me around 42 minutes to do the walk, and I go at a reasonable pace. It is not a simple walk but thought we should tell you about it if you are up for the challenge.
